Being a self professed horror comedy hater it pisses me off that these damn things are winning me over. First we had the way better than it should have been Tucker and Dale Vs Evil charm my pants off, (Burn those damn photos of me, T & D!) and now we have Orcs once again putting a coochie eating grin right on my face. Dont get me wrong its not quite as good as T.A.D.V.E but it still had its own charm that coddled me just right. Take note directors, having some cool interesting characters goes a long way in making a movie enjoyable. Even if you have a crappy unoriginal story, but you like the characters, then that makes up for a lot. The story is essential about a slacker park ranger named Cal (Adam Johnson), thats reluctantly teaching a “by the books do gooder” park ranger in training named Hobie (Maclain Nelson). On their first day of training they come across a missing park rangers head decapitated lying at the bottom of a shitter. Soon after they discover that their park and nearby town are being invading by Orcs that live in the park’s mountain range. Cal, Hobie, and Cal’s ex girlfriend Katie, must take matters into their own hands if they are going to protect their park from these ugly, vicious Lord of the Rings rejects. I’ve already alluded to my favorite part of the movie and thats the acting and characters. Adam Johnson’s take on Cal is pitch perfect and I enjoyed the presence he projected on the screen. His character reminded me a little bit of a Broken Lizards character, ala Super Troopers. He was your basic, I dont give a shit about my job, I’m gonna chill, fish, and smoke dope I confiscated from the local kids, kinda guy. In other words he was cool, laid back, and didnt want to take his job too serious like a lotta dickwads do. On the other hand Hobie, is naive but totally serious, and wants to do the right thing. But he also wants to be accepted by Cal so he’s willing to do things he normally wouldnt do just to fit in. In other words, nothing really original, but their performances won you over. I dont want to forget Marge (Barta Heiner), as the bitchy Park Ranger that bosses Cal and Hobie to do her bidding. She was also a cool, funny character that also added to the chemistry of the cast. A successful comedy will make me do the occasional smile but something gotta be really funny for me to laugh out loud. I can genuinely say there were at least 2 times it got an audible chuckle from me. Poor, poor, squirrel. But its greatest asset was forgotten for a good portion of the second half of the movie. When the Orcs hit the fan and started attacking the city then it got a little too serious in accordance to the tone of the rest of the movie. There’s a 20 minute sequence (seemed like 40) at the end when they are staving off the Orcs from attacking them at this station, where its just the same thing over and over. The Orcs charge towards the survivors and they are just shooting them with guns, bow and arrows and throwing dynamite at them. Nothing hilarious or funny at all. I think they could have devised some traps or did something funny, to make the scene work so much better. As far as the gore there were some pretty cool kills, Orc being shot and stabbed, arrows in chests, and all of it looked top notch. The Orcs themselves looked like they were purchased straight from the Lord of the Rings set, so they all looked legit. There was some cgi blood and kills but it looked better than your average Syfy and Asylum movie. Now it is a comedy and horror movie, so it ends pretty much with the formulaic ending of both genres of movies. You have your happy, sappy all the good guys win in the end comedic ending, plus you have your uh oh, its open for a sequel horror ending. To wrap up, it was enjoyable despite its decision to go for the more straight action horror second half. The characters were still likable enough and the rest was at least average in comparison to other similar movies. I’m looking forward to more from these fellows and with a little stronger script they may be able to someday release a horror comedy classic. As far as Orcs you can do much worse.
